There is also an interesting comparision between the 1930 picture of the Green and one taken in June this year from approximately the same postion, you can find these two pictures at the bottom of the Peartree Images page. Click on the thumbnails for larger images.

Recently Desmond and Molly Jones went down to the Waterfront just upstream of the Itchen Bridge on the public hard. We managed to take a few snaps of them while their backs were turned, you can see the results from the link on their page or from here: http://www.peartreegreen.org/des/water.htm .
Some of you may be aware of Beryl the Gnome ( http://www.beryl-the-gnome.co.uk ) , well, wonders of wonders, Beryl is making a flying visit to Peartree Green this coming Tuesday. Bound for Heathrow at the star of her world tour, Beryl has found a window in her very tight schedule to bless us with advice in axcjange for a swift pint at the Peartree Inn. We are very excited and have hardly stopped cleaning the place up since beryl's visit was confirmed. The missus has been extremely active.

There was a major fire on the Green this afternoon at around 2pm, it started at the north end of the Green adjacent to the railway line. As luck would have it a breeze was blowing from the north and the fire spread quickly south along the length of the Green but eastward spread was held by a wide firebreak/footpath. To the west of the railway line is Hazel Road which is lined with various waterside businesses and only last night one of these went up in flames. (By the way, I will post a map of the green shortly!)
The damaged area concisted of tall dry grass, large patches of bramble and quantities of small trees. The fire brigade did a good job of containing the fire but obviously decided to allow the blaze to burn itself out. As far I could tell no humans were hurt but I suspect that vast numbers of insects are no more. I'm sure that the green will recover (except for the trees) by next year.
I hope to have pictures of the fire posted by Saturday.

News & Updates
From now on I will be using Blogger to keep visitors abreast of what's happening on the Green and here at Peartree Green Dot Org. I am currently researching the Peartree Green area after the Roman period which could prove hard as there is little evidence of occupation on the easten bank of the River Itchen.
The weather has cooled down and is a very civilized 76 F so it's off to dig the garden shortly.
