I've just upload autumnal pictures of the Green & surrounding plus a few of the river. You can find them at http://www.peartreegreen.org/gallery/october.htm or click on the Autumn link on the side menu on the Gallery page.

Another incredibly clear sunny day here in Southampton, we all went into the City today and bought 'speakers for Maragold's computer and an excellent powered USB hub for me. We also got some rather nice lights for the Christmas tree.

If anyone has recently requested that they be added to the Peartree Mailing List could they please contact me as I may have lost your email due to messed up mailbox.

Peartree 21 is a group of local people who help maintain the Green, this mostly consists of cleaning up litter, removing scrub & the ever invasive knotweed. They do some good work and last year I spent my birthday helping to create a firebreak through gorse and bramble. If you are local then there are two workdays coming up on the 5th (1-4pm) & 8th (10am -4pm) of November, you can email me for more info.

The Group seems to have an issue with horse on the Green, at max we have had two tethered ponies grazing maybe a 20ft radius each. As far as I can see the presence of these animals adds to the environment in a number of ways and I plan to find out what the perceived problem is.

I hope to put up some more pics this weekend, I took a roll of film and should have some good autumnal shots.

It was announced this week that September was the driest month in the South of England for 130 years, this follows a dry summer and spring. We are being asked to take only showers and not use hose pipes to clean cars - reminds me of the Grand Drought of 1976 when we were asked to "save water - bathe with a friend"!

We did have one day of rain this week but since then it has got colder, there was a frost last night and the forecast is for 0 Deg C tonight.

I have updated the Web Master's Bookmarks at http://www.peartreegreen.org/links/bookmarks.htm . The new bookmarks mainly reflect my move from Windows to SuSE Linux. This move has gone really well and I would expect to be able to drop Windows completely by the end of the year (at the moment I am able to boot into both operating systems. My other future option is to run a stripped down Windows for testing purposes.

We had our second frost this morning, harder than the early one at the end of September. This weather, cold and sunny, creates a very clear light so that even the wooded horizon on the far side of Southampton is sharp edged.
