Tomorrow morning I'm off to see an exhibition by the developers of the Thornycroft shipyard - Woolston Riverside and I hope be able to get a clearer picture of what is planned. The latest newsletter is high on ideals but low on detail - this being the public consultation period. I am working on a section to cover the Riverside development.
I am also planning a section on Itchen Ferry Village which abutted the southern end of the Green. The village was flattened by enemy bombing on one evening in 1940. Very little remains - a couple of cottages on the waterfront and a few parts of buildings. From at least the early 17th century the men of Itchen village ran ferries across to Southampton, built ships and were fishermen.
