About the Green

Why peartreegreen.org?

Maybe one way of dividing up the human race is along the lines of those that just live where they live and those that need to know about where they live. I have always been curious about myself, my place in the world and the place that I happen to be in, at the very least it makes living more interesting!

Living on Peartree Green happened purely by chance and is the second nicest thing to happen to me in a decade, the first being that I had met and fallen in love with my, now, wife Mara. She was living in California so it was up to me to find a home for us and the first place that I looked at happened to be on the Green. The flat turned out to be in a spacious and airy 19th century house overlooking Peartree Green and within a couple of minutes of viewing it I was writing the cheque! We have been here and married a year now and, if anything, enjoy it more as the months pass. Our latest venture is a garden allotment just north of the Green.

Southampton is a deceptive city, the casual passer-through will miss the fact that it is one of the greenest cities in England and while many criticisms are leveled at city councils there can no denying that successive Southampton City Councils, of all hues, have nurtured and cared for the local environment.

Peartreegreen.org will grow as our interests develop and as resources permit. We aim to provide a visual experience of this very English place with regular photographic updates and, soon, a web cam exploring life on the Green. Check out the updates link below for news of the latest image galleries.

At the foot of each section of Peartreegeen.org you will find links to sites relevant to the content, these links can also be found in the Links section. Wherever we have used sources for information we will always give credit and links where they exist.

Latest News From the Green:  here.

The Webmaster

Originally from Woodley in Berkshire, I arrived in Southampton in 1992 via Reading, Falmouth, London, Winchester and Bishopstoke - a half century journey around the South of England! Most of my working life has been spent in electronics - I worked in three main areas, radio communications, tape recorder head development and fibre optic measurement generally at the level of repair engineer or development technician. In the mid eighties I moved into purchasing and then materials planning finally leaving industry in 1991 only to return in 1998.

Currently I am not employed in the electronics industry but do enjoy tinkering with computers and making Windows responsive in spite of M$ writing software from a marketing point of view!

Technical Stuff

I started learning to code HTML in 1997 and have always aimed to keep my pages as simple as possible by complying to the standards set down for HTML4, currently I ensure that my pages render correctly in Mozilla Firebird and Internet Explorer 6. Early on I discovered, and liked, the Webford HTML editor (Shareware) and have used it ever since. Maybe it's a case of the devil you know but I have tried various editors but it's Webford that migrates from machine to machine! For proving my coding I use CSE HTML Validator Lite v3.5 (Freeware) which is invaluable and a good editor also.

When it comes to image manipulation I am forever trying different programs and at the moment I am playing with Yildun Scanner (Freeware) which, ironically does not accept input from a scanner! The graphics program I use that does is IrfanView (Freeware) which has to be the best program there is for scanning, file conversion, slide shows and general image manipulation. I do not have a digital camera so all pictures are taken using an Olympus Accura View Zoom 120. These days most of my text in written and checked in Word then pasted into Webford.

For uploading files I use WS_FTP Pro v6.06 which was kindly provided FOC by my domain host OneandOne who, besides the free CD of very useful software, provide an excellent service.

June 2006: How things change! I'm still using Webford (no longer available), CSE HTML Validator and IrfanView. I no longer use MS Office but am a convert to OpenOffice. I use BladeFTP for uploading files. I have recently purchased a Canon PowerShot A530 digital camera so there will lots more Peartree pics! Oh, Firebird is now Firefox and has been for some time!
