The Missis and I went down to town this morning she to get some trousers for Sam and I to spend a couple of hours in the Local Studies Dept of the Library. We had coffee at a pavement cafe and watched the passing shoppers in the morning warmth. So many unhappy and / or cross faces, scowls aplenty. This seems to be the norm everytime we go into town. What is going on here?

My immediate response to that question is not unbiased but it may have some truth in it. I am by no means a model consumer, I buy when I need to not when some crass advertiser tells me to. I do not watch TV, do not read the tabloid press or the so called 'style' magazines. (Asked recently to take part in one of those silly consumer surveys aimed to find new ways to extract money from sensation hungry consumers my responses were at times farcical as I revealed time after time that I had not been inside some 'household name' store.) Call me simple but I have always thought that shops were for buying things that I want not that I was there to buy what they want me to.

Anyway my response to the question, what is going on here, is that those miserable consumers have been sold a pup and have to carry on believing 'cos what else is there - what way back. It's no good asking me, I never went down that road!
