We, the missis & I, are going have to get broadband and I will have to set up a home network 'cos the missis and I get to fighting about who goes online which is stupid! I have to go online each evening after supper & washing up - I always have done (well, since 1997) and I can't see me stopping now! So the only way to go is broadband and a home network.
The running costs are no great increase over present costs, that is, we pay £44 a quarter for "unrestricted" dialup access. In reality, right now, this service supplied by BT wholesale, to a local ISP, is pretty much useless. Some sort of rationing is going on in that after an hour on line if one comes offline then it is pretty hard to get back on again, naturally this stuff is hard to prove but feedback from local newsgroups supports the theory.
The only trouble with broadband is the set up cost,eg, modem/ router. At the moment we are looking at two computers but that will soon be three as Sam will no doubt want his own machine.
Tonight we were shouting at each other about online access, which is pretty silly and I need to go online when I want to!!!!!!!

I may not have a job at the Natural History Museum but I do have an interview for a post at Southampton University next week! There's hope for cranky old gits yet! At my age (157) it's a real boost to get an interview and to get the job would be great - no more train rides to the middle of nowhere much followed by a mile walk and the same in reverse each evening. We'll see :)

I Like Snails Last night I dreamt that I was starting a new job at the Natural History Museum. When I arrived the woman in charge, who was about 60 with short grey hair, gave me the shell of small snail and told me to go and identify it. The snail was about half an inch (12mm) across and the whorls were alternately light and dark yellow. I asked the woman where I needed to go to make the identification of the snail and she pointed towards the back of the museum.
When I arrived at the rear of the building I found a vast archway that opened onto a busy London street and I asked a woman worker where the place that I needed was and she indicated the street.
Sure enough, before you know it I am off on some silly adventure involving being in a glass bubble (the London eye?) - my dreams are so boring these days! Must be because I'm basically happy. Nothing like being unhappy and in an emtion seesaw if you wanted an exciting dreamlife :)
