Gnomes have been very busy these past days installing the SuSE 8.2 Linux distribution on this here HP Pavilion. My aim is to be rid of Windows altogether rather than migrate from Win 98. The main reasons are that I am constitutionally opposed to helping underhanded monopolies get bigger & richer, I get so fed up with the total lack of built in security that characterises MS products, (how many critical updates across their product range this year and, more to the point, how many discovered by their engineers!!!

So, this AMD K4 350 Mhz machine with 158MB of ram is now zooming along and looking good. There were a few hitches along the way, like the USB webcam mic that knackered all sound until unplugged, the need to fake the identity of my monitor as this particular LG Studioworks is unsupported.

As of now I am up and running for the web, Usenet, streaming audio & video, printing & email. There things to sort out, like the webcam and also the scanner but, for now at least, I am dual booting so can always drop back to Windows if needed. My intention is that my next system will be solely Linux and most likely Suse.
